Weather, July 31 – August 7

Classic high-mountain summer: brilliant sunny days, dramatic afternoon build-ups, and genuinely cold nights.

🌡️ The daily rhythm

  • Mornings: 38–45°F. Yes, really — frost isn't unheard of. Puffers at breakfast, shorts by ten.
  • Afternoons: 78–84°F and intensely sunny at altitude.
  • The swing is the story: a 40-degree range in one day. Layers on layers.

⛈️ Rain & sky

  • Brief afternoon thunderstorms are routine — plan big hikes for mornings, town or house time at 3 pm.
  • Sunset ~8:50 pm; alpenglow on the Tetons most clear evenings, free of charge.
  • Smoke is possible in August but the valley often stays clearer than Montana.

🏔️ Altitude, honestly

  • The valley floor is 6,200 ft — most people feel it as thirst and slightly harder stairs for a day or two.
  • Grandparents: hydrate, pace day one, and skip wine the first night. The tram tops out at 10,450 ft — fine to visit, just slow.
  • Kids adjust fastest of everyone.

Where to stay

Everything is 25 minutes from everything, so the choice is about vibe — and about where a group our size can actually find a roof.

Town of Jackson Most convenient

Walk to the square, the shootout, restaurants, and the rodeo. Groceries and pharmacies at hand. Big homes exist on the edges of town — the easiest logistics for five families, especially with grandparents.

Wilson Best big homes

The leafy in-between: 10 min to town, 15 to Teton Village, moose in the yard. This is where the large group compounds tend to hide. Quiet nights, easy mornings.

Teton Village Resort base

The tram out the front door, pools, bike paths, and the base-area kid zone. Condo clusters work if one giant home doesn't materialize — though dinner for 19 means booking or shuttling to town.

Victor / Driggs, Idaho Budget lever

Over Teton Pass, 45–60 min out. Noticeably cheaper big houses. It's a real commute to everything though — only if the budget demands it.

For every age in the crew

Things to do

The full menu lives on the trip page's activity board (vote there!) — this is how it maps to our people.

⭐ The whole-crew must-dos

  • Snake River scenic float — 10 calm miles under the Tetons; minimum age 6, which our youngest just clears.
  • Jenny Lake — boat shuttle across, short hike to Hidden Falls, paddle or picnic after.
  • Aerial tram to 10,450 ft — waffles at Corbet's Cabin on top.
  • Town square evening — shootout at 6, ice cream after, antler arches photo.

🧒 Ages 6–9

  • The shootout & stagecoach ride — peak cowboy for the under-10s.
  • String Lake — the warmest, shallowest swimming in the valley.
  • Teton Village base area — bungee trampoline, climbing wall, mini golf.

🎒 Ages 10–13

  • Snow King — cowboy coaster and treetop ropes course, right in town.
  • Whitewater section of the Snake for the brave ones (8+ typically).
  • Rent paddleboards at String or Jackson Lake.

👴 For the grandparents

  • National Museum of Wildlife Art — world-class, with a café overlooking the elk refuge.
  • Bar T 5 covered wagon cookout — Dutch-oven dinner and cowboy music; zero walking.
  • Scenic drives — Moose-Wilson Road and Mormon Row barns at golden hour.

🌋 The Yellowstone day trip

  • Doable once: leave by 7 am, Old Faithful + Grand Prismatic, back by dinner.
  • It's a long day with a 6-year-old — consider splitting: half the crew goes, half has a lake day.
  • West Thumb geysers are the low-crowd bonus stop on our route.

🤠 Evenings

  • Jackson Hole Rodeo — Wednesday and Saturday nights, all ages genuinely entertained.
  • Granite Hot Springs — a soak up Hoback Canyon on a cool evening.
  • Music on the square, s'mores at the house — see the dinner rotation.
Rough numbers, 2026 prices — plan a touch higher for 2027

What it roughly costs

Ballparks for budgeting, not quotes. Jackson runs pricier than Glacier across the board — the trade for having everything in one valley. Flights excluded.

The booking clock

When to book what

Jackson in peak summer is one of the tightest lodging markets in the country. The clock matters more here than anywhere:

Now → Fall 2026 · 10–12 months out
The house

Large homes for July 2027 are already bookable — and the handful that sleep 16+ near town go the earliest of anything in this guide. If Jackson wins the vote, book within weeks.

Winter 2026–27 · 6–8 months out
Flights + rental cars

JAC is small and fares into it run high — set alerts, consider one-stop through SLC or Denver. Rental cars genuinely sell out; book with the flights.

Spring 2027 · 3–4 months out
Floats, cookout, safari, rodeo

The Bar T 5 and morning float slots go first. One person books for the whole group — most outfitters take large-party reservations happily if you're early.

~1 month out
Dinner reservations

The three or four "nice dinner" spots that can seat 19 book weeks ahead in summer. Two reservations is plenty — the house and the rotation cover the rest.

Day of
Hikes, lakes, town

Jenny Lake boat, String Lake, Snow King, the square — all show-up-and-go. Early parking at Jenny Lake (before 9 am) is the only catch.

Getting around

🚙 The fleet

Plan on 4–5 vehicles. JAC's rental desks are tiny and sell out for peak weeks. The airport is inside the park — you land looking at the Tetons.

🕐 Drive times

  • JAC airport → Jackson town: ~15 min
  • JAC → Teton Village: ~25 min
  • Town → Jenny Lake: ~35 min
  • Town → Old Faithful: ~1 hr 45 min

🚲 The pathway system

Miles of paved, separated bike paths connect town, Wilson, and Teton Village. Renting bikes for a morning is one of the valley's best family moves — even the grandparents on e-bikes.

The fine print that matters

Good to know

🦌 Wildlife everywhere

Moose in Wilson yards, elk on the refuge, bears in the park. Same rules as Glacier: distance, bear spray on trails (buy it there), and the kids will remember the moose longer than anything we paid for.

⛰️ Altitude, again

It bears repeating for the grandparents: 6,200 ft valley floor. Easy first day, lots of water, and everyone's fine by day two. It's the one real health consideration of this option.

💵 Sticker shock

Jackson is a resort economy — figure 25–40% pricier than the Glacier option for lodging and dining. The upside: far more restaurants, services, and rainy-day options within 20 minutes.

📵 Cell service

Good in town and the Village, patchy to none in Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Offline maps + a daily meeting plan, same as anywhere out here.

🎿 The two-parks card

One base gives us Grand Teton daily and a Yellowstone day trip — no other town in America offers that combo. That's the case for Jackson in one sentence.

🏔️ Why Jackson wins

Two national parks, a real town with restaurants and a rodeo, the tram, and the most efficient airport arrival imaginable. The case against: cost, altitude for the grandparents, and peak-summer crowds in town.
