Weather, July 31 – August 7

Early August is the sweet spot: the snow is long gone from the roads, the lakes are as warm as they get, and the days are enormous.

🌡️ The daily rhythm

  • Mornings: 45–52°F. Fleece weather — perfect for early trail starts before crowds.
  • Afternoons: 75–85°F. Shorts and lake time. Higher up at Logan Pass it stays 10–15° cooler.
  • Evenings: cool fast. S'mores night needs sweatshirts, even in August.

🌧️ Rain & sky

  • Statistically 1–2 brief rain days that week — usually an afternoon shower, not a washout.
  • Sunrise ~6:15 am, sunset ~9:30 pm — you can do two "days" in one and still eat dinner late.
  • Late-summer wildfire smoke is possible — some years crystal clear, some hazy. Check AQI the week before and have a Whitefish backup day in mind.

🏊 The water

  • Lake McDonald hits the low 60s°F in August — cold to adults, irrelevant to children.
  • Rocky beaches: water shoes make or break the little kids' beach day.
  • The rivers are snow-melt cold — rafting outfitters provide wetsuits when needed.

Where to stay

The west side is our side — it's 30 minutes from the airport and has the towns, the big rental homes, and Lake McDonald. Four realistic bases:

West Glacier / Apgar Closest

The park's front door — walk or bike to Lake McDonald, rafting outfitters in town, zero commute to everything. Fewer giant homes here, so think a cluster of cabins rather than one compound. Books out first.

Columbia Falls Best value

15 minutes from the gate, a real Montana town with groceries and pizza. The best odds of one big house or two adjacent homes that fit all five families without resort pricing.

Whitefish Most amenities

35–40 minutes out, but it's a genuine resort town: restaurants for 19 without cooking, the mountain's alpine slide/zip line day, a lake with easy swimming. The most large luxury homes in the area.

Many Glacier / East side Day trip, not base

The most jaw-dropping corner of the park — but 2.5 hours from the airport with very little lodging. Visit it once with a picnic; don't base there with this many people.

For every age in the crew

Things to do

The full menu lives on the trip page's activity board (vote there!) — this is how it maps to our people.

⭐ The whole-crew must-dos

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road — plan a full morning; stop at Logan Pass and the overlooks.
  • Lake McDonald day — kayaks, beach, ice cream at Apgar Village.
  • Trail of the Cedars — flat boardwalk through giant cedars; stroller and grandparent friendly.
  • Huckleberry everything — bear claws at Polebridge, shakes everywhere.

🧒 Ages 6–9

  • Junior Ranger badge — free booklet, real badge ceremony; the 6-year-olds take it very seriously.
  • Apgar beach + kayak morning — shallow, calm, easy bail-out.
  • Historic boat cruise — a wooden boat "pirate ship" ride as far as they're concerned.

🎒 Ages 10–13

  • Whitewater rafting on the Middle Fork — the trip they'll talk about at school.
  • Zipline course in West Glacier — seven lines of big-kid adrenaline.
  • Avalanche Lake hike — 4.5 miles round trip to a lake under waterfalls; very doable at that age.

👴 For the grandparents

  • Historic Red Bus tour — the 1930s open-tops over the Sun Road; someone else drives, everyone gawks.
  • Boat cruises on Lake McDonald or Many Glacier — the park's best views from a bench seat.
  • Lake McDonald Lodge porch at sunset — the easiest great hour of the trip.

🌧️ Rainy or smoky day

  • Whitefish Mountain Resort — alpine slide, aerial park, lift rides.
  • Whitefish town — toy store, bakery crawl, lake swim if it's just haze.
  • Movie + game afternoon at the house — it's a vacation, not a checklist.

🚗 If we're feeling ambitious

  • Polebridge & the North Fork — dirt-road Montana, famous bakery, no electricity since 1914.
  • Two Medicine or St. Mary on the east side, paired with driving the full Sun Road.

The booking clock

When to book what

Peak-summer Glacier with a group this size rewards the early. Working back from July 31, 2027:

Now → Fall 2026 · 9–12 months out
The house

Homes that sleep 16–20 in peak summer are scarce and go first. The best ones for July 2027 will be booked by Thanksgiving 2026 — this is why the vote closes in September.

Winter 2026–27 · 6–8 months out
Flights + rental cars

FCA is a small airport — decent fares come and go, and rental fleets genuinely sell out for peak weeks. Book cars the same day as flights.

Spring 2027 · 3–4 months out
Rafting, Red Bus, boat cruises, zipline

The good time slots (morning floats, sunset cruises) book out weeks ahead in summer. One person should book for the whole group at once.

~2 weeks out
Logan Pass shuttle tickets + parking plan

Good news: the old timed-entry vehicle reservation was eliminated in 2026. Instead there's a 3-hour parking limit at Logan Pass in peak season and a cheap reservation-only express shuttle (book on recreation.gov). Rules can shift again — check nps.gov in spring 2027.

Day of
Hikes, beaches, bakery runs

Everything else is show-up-and-go. Trailhead parking is the only "reservation" — earlier is better.

Getting around

🚙 The fleet

Plan on 4–5 vehicles (or 3 big SUVs/minivans). FCA's rental counters are small — reserve early. Cars caravan well here; the drives are half the scenery.

🕐 Drive times

  • FCA airport → West Glacier: ~30 min
  • FCA → Whitefish: ~20 min
  • West Glacier → Logan Pass: ~1 hr (the fun hour)
  • West side → Many Glacier: ~2.5 hrs

🚌 The Logan Pass shuttle

As of 2026 the park runs a reservation-only express shuttle to Logan Pass (about $1 in fees, booked on recreation.gov) from Apgar and Lake McDonald Lodge — the stress-free way to skip the 3-hour parking limit up top.

The fine print that matters

Good to know

🐻 Bears, really

This is genuine grizzly country. It's a feature, not a bug — from a distance. Buy bear spray there (~$50, can't fly with it), keep kids between adults on trails, make noise, and never leave food out. The park's rules are simple and the rangers are great with kids about it.

📵 Cell service

Mostly none inside the park. Download offline maps, set a daily meeting point, and treat it as a feature — the group chat can wait.

⛰️ Altitude

The valley sits at ~3,200 ft — a non-issue for the grandparents, and gentler than Jackson's 6,200 ft. Logan Pass day trips touch 6,600 ft briefly.

🍦 Food strategy

One big Costco/Super 1 run in Kalispell on arrival day, cook most nights (see the dinner rotation), eat out in Whitefish once or twice. Park-adjacent restaurants are fine but slow in peak season with a group our size.

🇨🇦 Bonus idea

Waterton, the Canadian half of the park, is ~2 hrs from the east side. Only worth it if we're already doing an east-side day — and only if everyone brings passports (kids too).

🌲 Why Glacier wins

Lower altitude for the grandparents, warmer lake for the kids, cheaper lodging than Jackson, and the single best scenic drive in the country. The case against: further from a big airport hub, and wildfire smoke is a wildcard.
